Driving Stepper Motors
( invented in 1936 by a french engineer called Marius Lavet )
RepRap 3D-printers use 5 stepper motors, and can -still- be moved via a Arduino MEGA 2560 and a RAMPS shield. Some modern 3D-printers have new 32 bits boards since some years now like the Creality Ender3 or Artillery X2, but they are less modular and harder to repair.
Those boards are open-source until a certain point : the micro-controllers are not open-source.

Playing with Arduino boards is cool ! Good applications can help live better : around disabled people, growing vegetables, automatically feed your pets, or farm ! Securing things with presence sensors, or turning lights on/off when needed to save energy.
Here's an excellent app to document and even help you write the firmware code : CirKit.
But programming is easy to learn : Arduino boards use the C language, and the interface has examples out of the box. Many libraries help you read sensors and move things around with servo motors or other systems.
